The attack carried out by Vladimir Putin yesterday in Ukraine, which left at least 35 dead, including two minors, was deliberately aimed "against civilians." This was denounced on Monday by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, who added that "Russia has been silent for several weeks and yesterday demonstrated its lack of willingness to progress towards a ceasefire that could be a first step towards a fair and lasting peace."
"Therefore, we have on one side Ukraine, which wants peace, and on the other side Russia that indiscriminately attacks civilians in a blatant violation of international humanitarian law," emphasized the Spanish minister after participating in the European Union Foreign Affairs Council held in Luxembourg.
The aggression specifically took place with ballistic missiles on the city of Sumy, during "such an important day in Ukraine as Palm Sunday," highlighted Albares, and weeks after the United States mediated to propose a ceasefire to which Putin has not yet responded. "Therefore, we have on one side Ukraine, which wants peace, and on the other side Russia that indiscriminately attacks civilians in what is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law," expressed Albares.
"Europe, and as I conveyed today in the Council meeting, must stand even more behind Ukraine and alongside Ukraine. We must ensure assistance so that it can continue to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," he stressed.
Possible sending of Taurus missiles
Albares was also asked about the possibility of Germany sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine, something he did not want to comment on but which would substantially change the conflict as it would allow, "for example, to destroy the main land communication between Russia and Crimea" and cut off the supply to the Russian Army.
The next German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, stated this in Berlin today, as reported by Efe, emphasizing that "in the event of new Russian attacks, Ukraine must be able to destroy the most important communication between Russia and Crimea because the Russian Army has a large part of its reserves in Crimea." "I said it and what I said is valid. It is not about us intervening in this war but about providing this type of weaponry to the Ukrainian Army," added Merz.
Returning to Albares' statements, the Minister of Foreign Affairs also denounced the "absolutely unacceptable attack on a hospital in Gaza" that occurred yesterday. He also demanded that the EU "must provide financing to both the Palestinian National Authority and to Unrwa [United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East]" without imposing further requirements as planned.
