A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Republic of Altai in southern Siberia on Saturday morning, according to Russian seismologists, as reported by AP.
The tremor was recorded at 8:48 in the morning, explained the Russian state news agency Interfax, citing the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Tremors were also felt in neighboring regions.
In a Telegram message, the regional head, Andrei Turchak, said there were no casualties, but a "maximum alert regime" was implemented, including the cancellation of public events and potential water supply issues in areas near the epicenter.
Turchak indicated that preliminary assessments pointed to minor damage in some areas and rejected reports of greater destruction circulating on social media.
"I urge residents to trust officially confirmed information and remain calm," Turchak wrote.
