The Vice President of the United States, J. D. Vance, stated on Friday that Washington aims to ensure a "lasting" peace after his first meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, regarding efforts to negotiate with Russia the end of the war.
The meeting in Munich is considered a crucial moment for Ukraine, which seeks to keep the United States on its side after President Donald Trump surprised allies by engaging in talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to end the conflict.
"We want to achieve lasting peace, not the kind of peace that will leave Eastern Europe in conflict within a couple of years," Vance declared at the end of the meeting.
On his part, Zelensky says that Ukraine has "little chance" of surviving the Russian invasion without military support from the United States, he stated in an interview with NBC on Friday.
"You know the tough situations, you have a chance. But we will have little, very little chance of surviving without the support of the United States," Zelensky said in a preview of the interview that will be fully aired on Sunday.
