Russia has opened a criminal case against EL MUNDO journalist Alberto Rojas under a false accusation. Moscow asserts that the reporter stepped on Russian soil without the necessary permission. However, as reflected in the report published by this newspaper last Saturday under the title Trip to the Kursk border, Putin?s latest nightmare: "I fell the adrenaline but try to behave line a robot", the reporter worked at all times on Ukrainian soil.
EL MUNDO states that the accusations are completely false and defends the work of its reporter, always on Ukrainian territory.
Another journalist from this newspaper, Xavier Colás, was targeted by Russia in 2024. Moscow decided not to renew the visa of the EL MUNDO correspondent, who was forced to leave the country within 24 hours, in March of last year, weeks after the police visited his home. This happened in the context of the elections and after months of Kremlin pressure on foreign journalists.
The Investigative Committee of Russia announced today a criminal case against the journalist: "The investigation established that in February 2025, Rojas illegally crossed the state border with Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel without documents allowing him to enter Russian territory," says the official note posted on Telegram.
"The investigation is taking measures to determine Rojas's whereabouts and detain him. During the investigation of the criminal case, all circumstances of the offense committed by Rojas will be established, and a criminal and legal assessment of his actions will be carried out," the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported.
A completely false accusation since the journalist never set foot on Russian soil, as he explains himself in the report: "The journey to this place will not be peaceful at all. The instructions are clear: we will not be able to step on Russian territory, although we will reach the border, and we will not be able to photograph anything that can be geolocated"
"We are on the border between Sumy (Ukraine) and Kursk (Russia), in one of the most active fronts and we visit it during the battle that can decide how this ward ends" says Rojas' text.
