Sara Netanyahu, the wife of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is facing a criminal investigation, as reported by the Israeli Prosecutor's Office in a letter sent to an opposition lawmaker who had requested legal action, reports Afp.

The Prosecutor's Office does not specify the type of charges against Mrs. Netanyahu, who is currently in the United States.

However, Labor lawmaker Naama Lazimi accuses her of pressuring a witness in her husband's corruption trial, following the broadcast of an investigation on television.

This "notification (...) is important for parliamentary oversight, the judicial system, and the rule of law," celebrated the lawmaker shortly after.

"I will not be silent, I will not give in, and I will not allow this matter to be buried. Justice will be served, and we will ensure that it is."

The parliamentarian had made her letter to the justice system public following an investigation by the Ouvda program, aired on Channel 12, which claimed that Benjamin Netanyahu's wife tried to intimidate a witness in her husband's trial.

The report includes alleged audio recordings of Sara Netanyahu instructing her husband's former assistant, who has since passed away, to harass and launch a negative social media campaign against her husband's opponents, particularly against Hadas Klein, a key witness in the trial against the Israeli Prime Minister.

In December, the head of government appeared for the first time in his corruption trial, dismissing the accusations against him as "ridiculous."

That hearing marked the resumption of the trial, which began in May 2020 but was interrupted by the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu has filed several requests to postpone the proceedings, citing the Gaza conflict, which erupted after the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.

He is the first sitting Israeli Prime Minister to be criminally tried. He faces charges of corruption, fraud, and breach of trust.
