Carlos Correa, the director of the Venezuelan NGO Espacio Público, activist, and journalist of Galician origin, has been presented before a terrorism tribunal in Venezuela, reports Europa Press. Hours later, he was released. A week ago, he was detained in the Latin American country, as denounced by his wife, Mabel Calderín, becoming one of the dozens of political prisoners in the country governed by Nicolás Maduro.
"In the early hours of January 16, our director Carlos Correa was released from prison," Espacio Público stated on their social media account X. "We thank all the individuals, organizations, governments, and groups that joined the call for his release. We continue working for the defense of human dignity," they added.
Hours earlier, Correa's wife, Mabel Calderín, had stated that the activist had been presented before an anti-terrorism tribunal in the country. She also emphasized that she did not know her husband's whereabouts and revealed that the prosecutor of economic crimes, Alirio Mendoza, had confirmed that he had been presented before the tribunal, without details on the charges brought against him.
"Every day that passes, Carlos's health, life, and personal integrity worsen. I demand that the authorities provide answers and allow me to access the place where he is located so that he can receive his medications and medical supervision," she declared, referring to the pathologies he suffers from and that require ongoing treatment.
The man was arrested on January 7 in Caracas when he was approached by "several hooded individuals" as he was leaving his workplace, as reported by his family, who later filed a 'habeas corpus' petition to secure his release.
