The musical Emilia Pérez, by Jacques Audiard, co-starring Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón, will be a candidate in 10 categories at the Golden Globes, the awards founded by the association of accredited foreign journalists in Los Angeles (now unaffiliated with their organization) that serve as the first act of the Oscars. Karla Sofía Gascón herself has been nominated for the best female performance in a comedy or musical.

The Spanish actress will compete for the award with Cynthia Erivo ('Wicked'), Mikey Madison ('Anora'), Demi Moore (The substance'), Zendaya ('Challengers'), and Amy Adams ('Nightbitch').

Also, Javier Bardem will be vying for a Golden Globe for his role in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. This marks his sixth career nomination for a Golden Globe and the first in television categories. In 2008, he won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a film for No Country for Old Men, and this time he is competing for his work as Best Supporting Actor in television for this Netflix series that dramatizes the (real) plot of two brothers conspiring to murder their parents.

The biggest Spanish loser in the nominations announcement has been Pedro Almodóvar, whose The Room Next Door has been completely overlooked.

Following Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist has received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Drama, and acting nods for Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce. The A24 film, set to be released soon, premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Brady Corbet was awarded the Silver Lion for Best Director.

Close behind is Conclave, by Edward Berger, starring Ralph Fiennes as a cardinal tasked with leading the conclave to elect the new Pope. Anora, by Sean Baker, winner of the Palme d'Or and starring Mikey Madison as a Brooklyn sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, has been nominated for five awards, including Best Comedy or Musical, Best Actress for Madison, and Best Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov.

Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Denzel Washington, Ariana Grande, Glen Powell, and Selena Gomez will also be contenders.

Another film with multiple nominations is The Apprentice, the production about the youth of Donald Trump that the president-elect dismissed as the work of "human garbage."

The Golden Globes will hold their ceremony in Los Angeles on January 5, with Audiard's film as the top favorite.

Emilia Pérez tells the story of Rita, a lawyer who receives a commission from a client who turns out to be Mexico's most feared drug lord: he asks her to help him disappear behind the dream he pursued since childhood, to become a woman. The lawyer, Zoe Saldaña, and the drug lord's wife, Selena Gomez, thus accompany Gascón, an actress previously unknown to the Spanish public, who underwent a similar journey to her character's and has become the sensation of the season. Gascón was already awarded at Cannes and appears on all lists as a potential Oscar nominee. She would be the second Spanish actress to grace the Hollywood red carpet after her compatriot Penélope Cruz.
