The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has suspended British dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin for a year and fined her 10,000 Swiss francs (107,000 euros) for "conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare," as reported by the federation in a statement picked up by Efe.
On July 22, 2024, the FEI received a video showing Dujardin excessively whipping a horse during a training session at a private stable, and the next day, the British rider confirmed it was her and decided to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and be provisionally suspended, so the sanction will be in effect from July 23, 2024to July 23, 2025.
During this time, Dujardin is prohibited from participating in all activities related to competitions or events under the jurisdiction of the FEI or a national federation.
As stated in the FEI Tribunal decision, the rider's acceptance of the proposed sanctions makes this decision final and not subject to appeal.
"It is regrettable that this case has put our sport in the headlines for the wrong reasons, especially during a critical time leading up to the Olympic Games," expressed FEI Secretary General Sabrina Ibáñez.
British rider Charlotte Dujardin is a three-time Olympic gold medalist in dressage.
