The snowstorm hitting Afghanistan has claimed the lives of three children, who died due to extreme cold while walking between two villages in the northeast of the country, reports Efe.

"Unfortunately, three children traveling towards the village of Colar (in the northeastern province of Badakhshan) lost their lives due to heavy snow and intense cold," said the deputy director of the Department of Information and Culture of the province of Badakhshan, Zabiullah Amiri.

It was specified that the deaths occurred on Friday in the area of Nawabad Siyab, in the district of Raghistan.

The deceased children were between 9 and 12 years old, according to authorities.

They were walking a distance equivalent to a two-hour journey with a fourth older youth who managed to withstand the weather conditions.

The Afghan geography, dominated by particularly rugged mountain ranges such as the Hindu Kush or the Pamir range, with scarce and very poor infrastructure, presents significant challenges for the local population.

Transportation routes in Afghanistan remain underdeveloped, and it does not seem that their situation will improve in the coming years, in a country marked by decades of conflicts, economic limitations, and geographical, meteorological, and climatic challenges.
