More than two weeks have passed since Tuesday, October 28, when a DANA turned Valencia into the scene of one of the most significant tragedies in Spanish history. The victims' homes were the main scenarios of this catastrophe 20 days ago. 45.8% of the 218 fatalities from the DANA in the Valencian Community were found inside houses (68) and garages (32).
Provisional data published by the Center for Data Integration (CID) show that the majority (137) of the body recoveries performed by forensic experts were indoors, with houses being the main locations, followed by garages, underground parking lots (5), elevators (2), or commercial premises (1).
Up to four people were brought alive to a hospital in the area but eventually passed away in the healthcare facility. Additionally, 10 people lost their lives in nursing homes and one in a religious temple.
Regarding the victims of one of the cruelest tragedies in Spanish history, 37% (81) were found outdoors. Mostly in natural areas such as fields (22), irrigation ditches (3), ravines (3), the beaches of El Saler, Pinedo, and Sueca (3), or the Albufera (1).
One of the most striking images seen since the tragedy began was that of the flood dragging cars kilometers away from where they were parked. During the initial hours of the catastrophe, one of the main concerns was for people who might have been trapped inside their cars. With the provisional figures provided, officially seven people were found in vehicles and two next to them.
The Valencian municipalities where most of these deceased bodies were recovered were Paiporta (45), Catarroja (25), Valencia (16), Alfafar (15), Massanassa (12), and Picanya, Torrent, and Benetússer with 10 each. It is worth noting that the municipal term and the exact area where the body was recovered are considered, not the municipality where the deceased person was registered. The analysis of these figures and the locations where the victims were found clearly indicates the enormous magnitude of one of the indelible scars on the Valencian population.
