At least 35 people were killed and 43 injured after being run over on Monday night in Zhuhai, in southern China, reports AP. "A serious and aggressive attack took place at the Zhuhai Sports Center, where a suspect drove his car into people exercising, leaving 35 dead and 43 injured," said the city's police, which is currently hosting a major aviation fair.
The 62-year-old driver was detained, the police reported earlier. It was not immediately clear whether it was an attack or an accident. No motive was mentioned, and the police stated that investigations were ongoing. The man was identified only by his surname, Fan, following Chinese authorities' customs.
The affected sports center in the Xiangzhou district regularly attracts hundreds of locals, where they can run on the track, play soccer, or dance. Following the incident, the center announced it would be closed until further notice.
China has seen a series of attacks where suspects appear to target people at random, such as schoolchildren.
In October, a 50-year-old man was arrested after allegedly using a knife to attack children at a school in Beijing. Five people were injured. In September, three people died in a knife attack at a supermarket in Shanghai.
