These United States elections are historic in many ways, one of them being the inclusion of social minorities as leaders and political figures of influence. Democrat Sarah McBride has taken a giant step in breaking barriers and will be the first transgender person in the US Congress after winning Tuesday's elections to the House of Representatives in the state of Delaware, as reported by Efe. McBride defeated Republican candidate John Whalen III.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest organization advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in the United States, which had endorsed McBride's candidacy, applauded her victory.
"We are so proud, Congresswoman-elect Sarah McBride! Your story will help LGBTQ+ youth to dream bigger, reach higher, and change the world," added the organization.
McBride, 34, was elected to the Senate of Delaware in 2021, making her the first transgender person to hold a state senator position in the US.
