An individual detonated an explosive inside a California courthouse on Wednesday, leaving five injured who had to be transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The incident has led to the complete closure of the judicial building and other complexes in the city, according to authorities informed to AP.

The perpetrator, a 20-year-old young man, has been arrested after the explosion that occurred shortly after 5:45 p.m. (Spanish time) at a courthouse in Santa Maria, the police said. The city, with about 110,000 inhabitants, is located in Santa Barbara County, on the central coast of California.

The man, who resides in Santa Barbara, had already been arrested for illegal possession of weapons and was heading to court on Wednesday morning to be prosecuted when he entered the building and threw a bag at the checkpoint, which exploded, as reported by Santa Barbara Police Deputy Chief Craig Bonner. Authorities, on the other hand, have stated that there is no indication that this action is related to terrorism or political violence.

The authorities apprehended the suspect as he was leaving the courthouse trying to get into his car. He was wearing a bulletproof vest under his jacket and was not injured in the explosion, Bonner confirmed. He was booked on serious charges of attempted murder, use of an explosive device, and possession of explosive devices.

"We believe this is a local matter that has been safely resolved and no longer poses any danger to the community," Bonner added.

Bonner also indicated that three of the five victims suffered burns. All received medical attention and were discharged from the hospital. None of them were courthouse employees.

Authorities are also investigating whether the suspect is linked to a series of recent arson fires in the area. He had already been arrested in July when officers discovered and seized a loaded revolver hidden on him.

After the explosion, authorities evacuated businesses, homes, and a school within a five-block radius. The courthouse will remain closed on Thursday while the police conclude their investigation. Due to the closure, extensions will be provided for the completion of legal procedures.

"It was a loud bang," Shane Mellon told KSBY-TV. Additionally, Mellon mentioned that a security guard escorted her out along with others.

Mellon said she saw what appeared to be a burning sweater and a man shouting while four or five people rushed to restrain him. "I think this could have been much worse. If it weren't for the security guards who jumped on that man," she concluded.
