"The European Union repeats its same old song, the same European Union that recognized (Juan) Guaidó, what a shame the European Union is, Mr. Borrell is a shame, a shame that led Ukraine into a war and now washes his hands." This is how President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro responded last Sunday at an event with the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB, militarized police), to the doubts expressed by the European Union about the results of the recent elections in Venezuela.

The European bloc has made it clear that it "continues to follow with concern the events" in the Caribbean nation. Not only that, but it also demanded a "greater independent verification of the electoral records". As stated in the EU Council's statement yesterday, "reports from international electoral observation missions clearly state that the presidential elections on July 28 did not meet international standards of electoral integrity."

Maduro also criticized the EU for asking Venezuelan authorities to respect the protests that have arisen since Monday in rejection of the official results published by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which declared the president as the winner. "Now they say that in Venezuela there is repression of peaceful demonstrations, Mr. Borrell says? Peaceful? When they attack the population, hospitals, CDI (Integral Diagnostic Centers), schools, bus units, metro stations?" questioned the Bolivarian leader. Meanwhile, opposition leader María Corina Machado insisted this Sunday that the voting witnesses' records in "more than 80% of the tables and available at resultadosconvzla.com, leave no room for doubt. Edmundo González Urrutia is the elected president of Venezuela."
