The unprecedented decision of the Colorado Supreme Court last December to not allow Donald Trump to run in the November 5 presidential election in that state for "insurrection," due to the 2021 Capitol assault, added an important link to an already long and quite complicated chain.

The former US president and favorite to be the next Republican candidate on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November is embroiled in several legal proceedings, both state and federal.

Cases that he must juggle with his new career (which seems to be meteoric) towards the White House.

As what happened last May, with the conviction for 34 counts of document forgery, tax fraud, and violation of campaign laws for the payment of $130,000 to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels to keep secret the sexual relationship they had in 2006.

These are the other most prominent cases that the 45th US president is facing:

The federal case for the Capitol

On January 6, 2021, just days before Donald Trump had to hand over the keys to the White House to Joe Biden, a mob stormed the Capitol and occupied it for the longest hours remembered in Washington. On August 1, Trump was charged by a federal grand jury with four counts, including conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering.

The indictment states that "the accused spread lies" and accused Joe Biden of committing electoral fraud even though he knew it was false. The federal trial in the nation's capital is set to begin on March 4.

The former president and 18 others associated with Trump were formally charged in Fulton County, Georgia for attempting to alter the outcome of the 2020 elections in that state. Trump was caught asking Brad Raffensperger, in charge of vote counting in that state, for the 11,270 votes he needed to beat Biden.

All face conspiracy charges and attempting to subvert the will of the voters. Trump was arrested and posted a $200,000 bond. Trump's mugshot as inmate number P01135809, "6'3" tall, 216 lbs, blue eyes, and reddish hair," will go down in history. Three of the co-defendants have already pleaded guilty.

In June 2023, a federal grand jury in Florida indicted Trump on 37 charges for the confidential documents he took to his country club and residence at Mar-a-Lago in Florida when he left the Presidency in January 2021. This July, Judge Aileen Cannon of Florida dismissed the case. The basis of the decision is that a special prosecutor must be appointed by Congress and not by the Executive.

Among the accusations were withholding national security secrets and obstructing government efforts to retrieve the files. Three additional charges were later added against Trump.
