Voice actor George Lowe, known for the cult series Space Ghost Coast to Coast on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, which aired between 1994 and 2012, has passed away at the age of 67. The causes of his death are currently unknown. The series, initially starring a strong space superhero fighting supervillains, later evolved into a late-night talk show mixing animation and action.
"I am devastated. My brother Zobanian and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me has also died. He was a highly talented voice artist and actor. A true genius with a warm heart. The funniest man on Earth as well. I've stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some from me too. He was also the voice of Space Ghost and much more," wrote his friend and radio host Marvelous Marvin Boone.
"One of the greatest voice actors of all time", said Billy West, a fellow professional.
"A wonderfully kind and funny man. A brilliant improviser. An art collector. A storyteller. Space Ghost was a genius and helped usher in a new wave of eccentric television shows," wrote X Casper Kelly, the writer, producer, and director behind Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell on Adult Swim.
"My heart is broken. George Lowe was one of the funniest people I've ever met and one of the nicest people to have ever existed. We will miss you more than you can imagine, my friend. Rest in peace," said Tim Frasier, executive producer at Premiere Networks, a subsidiary of iHeartRadio, on Facebook.
Lowe was born on November 10, 1957, in Dunedin, Florida, and worked in radio before transitioning to voice acting in the 1990s. He was also a visual artist and art collector, according to the American Visionary Art Museum, amassing hundreds of works, including pop art prints by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and others, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Space Ghost, originating in the 1960s on CBS (courtesy of Hanna-Barbera Productions), transformed in the 1990s from a serious space superhero fighting supervillains to an irreverent talk show host blending animation and live-action.
Space Ghost Coast to Coast was touted as the first late-night show featuring a cartoon superhero as a host and, during its run from 1994 to 1999 and intermittently until 2012, welcomed guests such as Björk, Adam Carolla, Conan O'Brien, Bob Costas, the Bee Gees, and REM's Michael Stipe, among others, accompanied by his TV band led by former nemeses Moltar and Zorak. Guests were filmed live and inserted into the animated show.
Lowe lent his voice to numerous roles in Adult Swim programs, including Robot Chicken, The Brak Show, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and in 2024 voiced Space Ghost in the Space Con episode of season 3 of Jellystone. In recent years, the voice actor spent time meeting fans at various Comic-Cons and similar gatherings.
