The star of Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofía Gascón, is under scrutiny for a series of posts on her account X in which the Oscar nominee criticizes Muslims, George Floyd (whom she calls a "drug addict scammer"), or diversity at the Oscars. The tweets, recovered this Thursday by 'Variety', were posted between 2020 and 2021 and have mostly been deleted.
"Sorry, is it my impression or are there more and more Muslims in Spain? Every time I pick up my daughter from school, there are more females with their hair covered and long skirts. Maybe next year instead of teaching English we should teach Arabic... and give out a lamb". This is one of the posts that has resurfaced on social media these days. It is not the only one in which she seems to attack Muslims and their religion.
In another post from September 2, 2020, she shares a photo of a Muslim family in a restaurant, including a woman in a burka, with the following text: "Islam is wonderful, without any kind of sexism," she commented ironically in a tweet that included an image of a family in which she is covered with a burka. "Women are respected, and when they are respected a lot, they are allowed a small square on their face to show their eyes and mouth, but only if they behave well. Although they dress like this by choice. What a deep disgust for humanity."
In 2016, she also posted that Islam was becoming "a source of infection for humanity" that needed to be "urgently cured". In 2021, the actress from Alcobendas once again criticized the religion by saying: "How many more times will history have to expel the Moors from Spain... we still have not realized what this threat of civilizations attacking individual freedom and coherence means. It's not about racism, it's about Islam".
Variety also highlighted a post in which the actress of Emilia Pérez comments on the murder of George Floyd, shot by a police officer. A death that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement in the US. "I truly believe that very few ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict scammer, but his death has once again shown that there are those who still consider blacks as monkeys without rights and those who believe that the police are murderers. All wrong." she posted at the time.
Gascón, who is the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Academy Award, also commented on the 2021 Oscars ceremony, the first one held after the Covid pandemic in which Nomadland won Best Picture. "They increasingly resemble an independent and protest-oriented film awards ceremony, I didn't know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or March 8th." She added: "They forgot to give an award to my cousin's short film, who is disabled".
Regarding Covid, in August 2020, Gascón wrote: "The Chinese vaccine, aside from the mandatory chip, comes with two spring rolls, a waving cat, two plastic flowers, a collapsible lantern, three phone lines, and a euro for your first controlled purchase.
Also, in August 2020, she said: "So many scientists in the world making bombs, so many scholars building objects for space, so many pharmaceutical factories, and no one is dealing with some Chinese crap. In the end, a tremendous show for a new variant of the flu, avian flu, or coronavirus."
It remains to be seen how these posts will influence Karla Sofía Gascón's Oscar race.
