The so-called film tourism or screen tourism is in vogue. In other words, traveling to a destination in search of the locations of famous series or movies filmed in that specific place. And Spain is one of those places. Along with the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, we are one of the countries where most productions are filmed. Therefore, it is not surprising that one out of every 10 European tourists chooses their vacation spot influenced by their favorite series and movies.
If we bring the theory to practical examples, New Zealand, Croatia, or Ireland offer a multitude of routes to enjoy in situ the settings of The Lord of the Rings, Vikings, or Game of Thrones, to name just a few cases. This latter HBO series even has its own theme park in the small town of Banbridge, on the aforementioned Emerald Isle and just half an hour south of Belfast.
And when we talk about the land of the Seven Kingdoms, we cannot forget Cáceres, as many scenes of the popular series have been filmed here. From the capital itself to the palatial city of Trujillo, passing through the Natural Monument of Los Barruecos in Malpartida de Cáceres. These are some of the places identified with Game of Thrones. But the Extremaduran province has also been the backdrop for other famous international productions like House of the Dragon.
For all these reasons, Cáceres has been chosen as the best destination in the world to visit following the routes of your favorite series or films. In other words, it is the preferred place by tourists as a cinematic or television setting. This is according to the latest report based on data from the number of filmed productions, impact, traveler visits according to TripAdvisor, and mentions on social media.
In Spain, the Teide National Park has been elevated to the Olympus of series by, once again, the mega-famous Game of Thrones. Another destination in our country that makes it into this ranking is San Juan deGaztelugatxe, the second most visited place in the Basque Country. And a large part of the credit goes to the HBO series.
Returning to Cáceres, the chosen settings for filming Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon have been the Plaza de las Veletas, the Arco de la Estrella, the plazas of Santa María, San Jorge (also used to film the Spanish fiction La Catedral del Mar), or San Matero, the Palace of the Golfines, the Cuesta de la Compañía (or Cuesta de Aldana, a place full of legends where you can admire the Casa del Sol or the Casa del Mono), or the Adarve, the inner path that once ran along the wall and passed through the old Jewish quarter.
The stately town of Trujillo has also been chosen by HBO's executives to film Game of Thrones. Its castle (where the memorable King's Landing landing took place), as well as the Wall of the Arch of Triumph or the Arab Cistern, have been some of the most famous settings of the series, in which many locals have participated as extras. The route continues at Los Barruecos in Malpartida de Cáceres, where the Great Battle of Game of Thrones, the most important of the entire series, took place. There, the Lannister troops are trapped by the Dothraki and Unsullied, led by Daenerys Targaryen, riding a dragon.
