American actor Richard Gere will receive the International Goya 2025, the Spanish cinema's distinction for an international filmmaker. The tribute will take Gere to Granada, the city that will host the Goya Awards gala on February 8. The Academy of Cinema has explained its decision "for his extraordinary contribution to the cinematic art, starring in some of the most iconic films in the history of cinema, and the social commitment shown in his personal and professional life."
Days of Heaven, An Officer and a Gentleman, American Gigolo, The Cotton Club, Pretty Woman, and the musical Chicago, for which he won the Golden Globe, are the titles highlighted by the Academy in Gere's career. His will be the fourth International Goya in history. Cate Blanchett, Juliette Binoche, and Sigourney Weaver have preceded him in the award's list, "created to recognize personalities who contribute to cinema as an art that unites cultures and viewers from around the world."
